His Excellency, Saud Hamad Al-Shamsi, Ambassador of the United Arab Emirates (UAE) visited the University of Pécs on 14 September. Dr. Attila Miseta rector, Dr. Ferenc Jakab, vice-rector for Innovation, and Dr. István Tarrósy, director of the UP International Centre welcomed the ambassador in the Rector's Council Room to explore opportunities for cooperation.
Dr. Attila Miseta, rector briefly described the history of the university and its role in the region to Ambassador Saud Hamad Al-Shamsi. "Almost a quarter of the twenty-two thousand students of UP, four thousand five hundred active students come from abroad, from more than a hundred countries" - the rector highlighted, adding that he would like to increase the number of international professors. Dr. István Tarrósy, director of the International Centre of UP, emphasized that "we are glad that nearly eighty students from the United Arab Emirates have come to study at the University of Pécs" – and then invited the ambassador to cooperate in the framework of the great cultural event series, International Seasons, celebrating diversity, and shared other propositions as well.
Reflecting on the upcoming centenary of the University of Pécs, His Exc. Saud Hamad Al-Shamsi pointed out that although his country in its present form has only a little more than five decades of history, its development is remarkable, of which he gave an example: "in response to the question of what is impossible, we have created the Ministry of Possibilities, where we are implementing all the ideas that were previously thought to be impossible, such as going to Mars.
Our Hope probe has entered Mars orbit in 2021. Nothing is impossible!"
– emphasized the ambassador, who was interested in science, research and development and innovation, and suggested establishing an active relationship with UAE universities. During the his visit, His Excellency, Saud Hamad Al-Shamsi shared that he visited Pécs for the first time, and after his visit to the mayor, he also had the opportunity to admire the city from the air, which, according to him, is already close to his heart.
