The University of Pécs (PTE) has once again achieved an outstanding position in the UI GreenMetric World University Rankings, securing the 25th spot among 1,477 universities from 95 countries. This marks the fifth time PTE has been recognized as Hungary's greenest university, reinforcing its role as a global leader in sustainability.
Dr. Katalin Szili, PTE's sustainability curator, highlighted the university's progress since its model change, emphasizing the importance of integrating a systematic approach to education, research, and operations. She stated,
„Our goal is to incorporate sustainability into all educational and research fields while infrastructure developments also contribute to reducing environmental impact."
The establishment of the Green University and the Sustainable Development Coordination Council aims to systematically support the practical implementation of sustainability initiatives.
István Decsi, Chancellor of PTE, stressed the university's role in shaping societal perspectives, saying, „Universities not only educate and conduct research but also influence social attitudes. PTE is committed to setting an example for other organizations by adopting sustainable practices and delivering tangible positive impacts economically and socially through innovative research and development."
Tünde Kulcsár, head of the Green University, added, „Universities play a key role in shaping future generations' perspectives, contributing to a societal shift towards sustainability.
The Green University, established in 2024, fosters deeper and broader knowledge transfer and awareness, emphasizing developmental aspects among the university community."
The 2024 global ranking once again crowned Wageningen University & Research in the Netherlands as the world's greenest university, followed by Nottingham Trent University in the UK and the University of Groningen in the Netherlands.
